One way to hold this word: possess means to own or take hold of, and possessed is the other end of that, the side being held. Once you ask two questions, all three meanings fall into place. What is doing the holding? And is the person the one held, or the one holding? An evil spirit holds a person; a huge feeling holds a person; a fine mind is held by its owner.
