Moving and coming to rest on the surface, top, or area of something.
到…上
You can picture onto as a small arrow that lands ON a surface: something is moving, and the move ends with it sitting on top of something else — onto a bus, climbing onto a roof, dropping a plate onto the table. It is 'on' plus motion: not already there, but arriving and coming to rest on it.
可以把 onto 想成一枝落在表面上的箭頭：某個東西正在移動，而這個移動的結尾是「落到另一樣東西上面」——踏上公車、爬上屋頂、把盤子放到桌上。它是 on（在上面）加上動作：不是本來就在上面，而是「移過來、落到上面」。
