One way to hold this word: 'face' is the side of a thing that is turned for people to see. 'Facing' can be pictured as living around that side in two ways. Sometimes it means turned towards that side — two things looking straight at each other, like two seats or two pages. Sometimes it means the layer that makes that side — the stone put over a wall, the small piece of cloth sewn to an inside edge, the band of colour on a collar and cuffs. When you meet the word, a useful first question is whether it is talking about a direction or about a layer.
