Turn a coat inside out. Against your skin there is a second, smoother surface, cut to the same shape as the coat and covering the whole inside of it. That second surface is the lining. Everything the word covers is that idea of an inside face: sewn in, in a coat or a bag; grown in place, inside the stomach or the nose.
