Think of putting your hand inside a coat. Behind the outer cloth you feel a second, thinner piece of material sewn in. That hidden layer is what this lined points at: the thing has an inside as well as an outside.

可以想成把手伸進外套裡。摸到的不只是縫線，還有另一層薄薄的布，貼在外層後面。這個 lined 指的就是那一層不太看得到、卻真的存在的內裡。它可能讓東西更暖，可能更耐用，也可能只是穿起來比較順。重點永遠在「裡面還有一層」，跟外面看起來什麼樣子無關。

Think of a sheet of school paper with rows of straight lines printed across it. Something has lines running over its surface, and you can see them. Skin can end up looking the same way.

可以想成一張印著一道一道橫線的作業紙。表面上有線，而且看得見，這是這個 lined 的畫面。紙上的線是印上去的，用來引導字的高度。人臉上的線是時間、太陽和勞動留下的。兩種線來源完全不同，可是看起來都是一道一道橫過表面，所以英文用同一個字。
