Cladding is a skin of hard material — metal, wood, stone, plastic, or special boards — fixed over the outside of a building, a pipe, or a machine. It protects what is underneath, and it often makes the outside look finished. The walls behind it do the real holding-up; the cladding is the coat, not the bones. Builders use the word as a quiet technical term. In British news it now carries a serious extra feeling, because unsafe cladding on tall buildings has caused deadly , so some people hear safety as well as decoration. Paint, wallpaper, and a are not cladding.
