Picture a body with nothing on it — bare skin, no clothes covering it. 'Nude' is that uncovered, no-clothes state; from it come the activities done that way, the artworks of bare bodies, and even a colour the pale tone of bare skin.

From Latin 'nudus' meaning 'naked, bare' — the same root behind 'denude'. The core 'no clothes on' is the original Latin sense unchanged.
