中文會分「姪女」（兄弟的女兒）和「外甥女」（姊妹的女兒），但英文只有一個字 niece，兩種都算；連老公或老婆那邊的兄弟姊妹生的女兒，也一樣叫 niece。可以想成：英文的親戚稱呼不分父系母系，只看「差一輩、旁邊那一支」再看男女——女生是 niece，男生就是 nephew。注意 niece 不是 cousin：cousin（表／堂兄弟姊妹）是跟你同一輩的，niece 比你小一輩。
