    mother-in-law 就是「另一半的媽媽」。中文把它分成兩個詞——先生的媽媽叫「婆婆」，太太的媽媽叫「岳母」——但英文只有這一個字，聽的人要從「誰在講話」去判斷是哪一位。字尾的 -in-law 可以想成「因為一場婚禮才變成一家人的親戚」，同一組還有 father-in-law（公公／岳父）、sister-in-law、son-in-law。複數很特別，s 要加在 mother 上：mothers-in-law。
