Picture two rooms side by side. One has just been finished: cushions at right angles, nothing on the table, air that smells of paint. The other has a dent in the sofa where someone always sits, a book left open, a mug that has been refilled twice. Nobody arranged the second room; it simply carries the marks of being used. One way to hold lived-in is to keep that second room in mind — and then notice that English lends the same picture to a face and to a piece of acting.
