a cover that sits on top of a pot, box, jar, bin, or other container, and that you can lift off or put back on to open and close it.
蓋子
Picture the flat piece that sits over an opening — the top of a pot, a jar, a bin. Put it on and whatever is inside stays inside, unseen; lift it off and the inside is suddenly open to the air and to everyone's eyes. What makes a lid a lid is that it goes both ways: it can be pressed down, and it can be taken off.
