Picture a box with walls: what is inside stays inside, and the walls decide where the inside ends. Contain works from those walls in two directions — saying what is in there (a box, a book, a food), and holding something in that would otherwise get out (a feeling, a fire).
可以想成：一個有壁的箱子。裡面的東西留在裡面，那道壁決定了「裡面」到哪裡為止。contain 就從這道壁往兩邊用：一邊是說出裡面有什麼（箱子、書、食物），另一邊是把本來會跑出去的東西關住（情緒、火勢）。
