Picture the moment a thing is put into its place and left there working. English lets this one noun stand for every part of that moment: the act of putting it in, the thing now sitting there, the whole site full of such things, and — when the thing put in place is a person — the ceremony that seats them.
From the word’s history
Installation comes from Medieval Latin installare (in- 'in' + stallum 'stall'): its first English use, in the early 15th century, was the ceremony of seating a churchman in his own stall in the choir. The equipment sense — 'act of setting up, placing in position for use' — only arrives in 1882, which is why the ceremony sense sits at the far end of the modern entry despite being the oldest.
installation 來自中世紀拉丁文 installare（in-「進去」＋ stallum「席位」）：它在英文最早指的是把神職人員安坐到唱詩席專屬座位上的那場儀式。用在機器上的「架設、安置到可使用的位置」要到 1882 年才出現。所以「就職典禮」這個看起來最冷門的意思，其實是這個字最老的一個。
