A formal public event that follows a fixed order of traditional actions.

Picture an occasion where the actions are not chosen on the spot: everyone stands, someone speaks the set words, the certificate is handed over in the way it is always handed over. The word names that event, the formal manner itself, and — in one phrase — the plainness of doing something with none of it.
