Picture the moment you see something terrible and your whole body stops: you cannot look away, and you cannot move either. Horror can be thought of as that frozen mix of shock and fear — stronger and colder than being scared, because it comes with the sick feeling that this is really happening. From that one moment the word spreads in three directions. It names the feeling itself; it names whatever caused it (the horrors of the crash); and because it is such a big, heavy word, English also picks it up and uses it on small things, the way we call a naughty five-year-old a little horror.
