Start with the animal: a small, quick creature with hands, swinging through trees, grabbing things, never sitting still, and hard to predict. English keeps borrowing that picture — the restless energy, the cheeky trick-playing, the sense that something is around where it shouldn't be. Four of the six meanings, though, only survive inside fixed phrases; on its own, 'monkey' is the animal or a playful child.
