If you outsmart someone, you win by using your head — a trick, a clever plan, a better reading of the situation — not by being stronger or richer. Children outsmart their parents about bedtime; a company outsmarts a rival; a fox in a story outsmarts a farmer. It is an informal, slightly playful word. Smart here means clever, not well dressed and not like a slap. Close in meaning to , but outsmart is the one you will hear more in speech.
