You can picture 'heavily' as the feeling of weight pressing down — and then that weight spreading into everything it touches. At its root sits 'heavy': something with a lot of weight. As an adverb, that weight becomes 'a lot, to a great degree' (it rained heavily); it sinks a body into deep sleep (sleeping heavily); it makes breath and movement slow and (breathing heavily, speaking heavily); and it even shapes a thick, solid build. The thread running through all of it is mass — large amount, deep, slow, or solid.
