Picture something narrow measured across, with a clean line and nothing extra on it — a person's build, or a phone you can slide into a shirt pocket. 'Slim' is thin in a way that looks right, not thin in a way that worries you. From that shape comes a second use: when an amount is so narrow it has almost nothing left in it — a slim chance, a slim lead.
