Think of it this way: something takes up more space than you expected, so your arms and the room have to work around it.
一個東西「佔掉的空間比你預期的多」，於是你的手臂、你的房間都得繞著它調整。bulk 本來就是「一大團體積」，加上 -y 就變成「帶著一大團體積的」。注意這個字的重心不在重量、也不在漂不漂亮，而在「體積」——它就是大，大到你抱它要張開手、放它要騰位置。把這個畫面套在行李上，就是笨重；套在一個人身上，就是塊頭大。

From Middle English bulki, from bulk ('mass, volume') + -y.
bulky 是中古英語 bulki，由 bulk（一大團、體積）加上形容詞字尾 -y 構成。bulk 到今天還在用（buy in bulk 大量購買），所以這個字的核心一直沒有偏離：講的就是「體積這一團」。
