Picture the food a person or animal actually lives on day after day — what regularly goes on the plate. That everyday pattern of eating is the core of diet; only later does the word narrow to a special plan to eat less.

From Greek 'diaita' meaning way of life, regimen — how you live day to day. Food is the part of that way of life that stuck to the word, so 'diet' first means the eating pattern you live by, and only afterwards a plan to control it.

源自希臘文 diaita，原意是「生活方式、日常作息」——你每天怎麼過。後來這個字保留下來的，主要是生活裡「吃」的那一塊，所以 diet 先指你賴以維生的飲食模式，之後才衍生出「刻意控制它」的計畫。
