    中文會分「外婆」（媽媽的媽媽）和「奶奶」（爸爸的媽媽），但英文兩邊都叫 grandmother，一個字就好。真的需要說明是哪一邊，才會加 maternal（媽媽那邊）或 paternal（爸爸那邊），或直接說 my mother's mother。grand- 這個字頭可以想成「往上再一代」——mother → grandmother，再往上就是 great-grandmother（曾祖母）。平常跟家人講話多半用 grandma、granny 這種親暱的叫法，grandmother 聽起來比較正式，寫作文或介紹家人時常用。

You can picture one step further back up the family line: your mother's mother, or your father's mother. 'Grand-' marks that extra step up the generations, the same step you see in grandfather and grandson.
