    The mother or father of one of your parents. You have four grandparents, and the word is used most often in the plural, for both sides of the family together.

One step further up the family line than 'parent': the parent of your parent. Because it does not say man or woman, and does not say which side of the family, it is the neutral word that lets you talk about all four of them at once.
