Picture a hand already lifted to do something — to say the sharp true thing, to send the message, to step in and fix it — and then the hand comes down again, untouched. Nothing stopped it but the person's own judgement: it is wiser, or kinder, to leave this undone. The parts of the word show the same movement, for- (away, not) with bear (to carry): you go on carrying the thing instead of letting it out. The sound belongs to the picture too — as a verb the weight falls at the end, for-BEAR, which is what tells it apart in speech from the noun FOR-bear.

Wiktionary traces the verb to Old English forberan 'to forbear, abstain from, refrain; suffer, endure', built from the Germanic for- prefix with beran 'to carry, bear'. The old sense of carrying and enduring is still doing the work: what you forbear is something you keep inside rather than let out.

Wiktionary 把這個動詞追到古英文 forberan（忍住、戒除、克制；也有承受、忍耐的意思），是 for- 這個字首配上 beran（拿著、承受）。那層「扛著、忍著」的老意思今天還在做事：你 forbear 的東西，是被你留在裡面、沒有放出來的那件事。

This one only looks like the verb. Picture a line of people walking ahead of you down a long road: your grandmother, her mother, and names you have only seen written down. Those are your forbears — the family who went first. Say it with the weight at the front, FOR-bear, and say it in the plural, because it is a line rather than one person. Longman and Wiktionary both point this spelling to forebear, which is the form you will see more often.
