To desist is to stop doing something, and to stay stopped. It is a formal verb. You hear it most in law: a cease and desist letter tells a person or a company to stop, now, or face trouble. Teachers and parents almost never say desist to a child; they say stop. Though actually, desist already means stop — cease and desist doubles the idea for legal weight, the way official English likes to. You desist from an action: desist from calling, desist from using a name. It does not mean to fight the action (that is resist) or to say firmly that you are right (that is insist).
