A useful way to see this word is as everything that arrived in your hands before you were old enough to choose it — old buildings, songs, festivals, recipes, the languages spoken at your grandparents' table. Nobody bought it and nobody can take credit for it; it was handed over, and the people holding it now are expected to hand it on again. That is why heritage feels different from history: history is what happened, heritage is the part of it that is still in your hands.
