    distressing 是用來形容「事情」的：這件事讓人心裡很難受。它比 sad 強，而且不只是難過——裡面還有一點擔心、放不下的感覺，所以像「在陌生的城市裡身上沒有錢」這種又慌又難受的處境，英文就會說 a distressing situation。distressing 跟 distressed 很容易搞混：distressing 形容事情（The news was distressing.），distressed 形容人（She was distressed.）。可以想成同一個 distress（難受）有兩個方向：distressing 是「這件事把難受送出來」，distressed 是「人接到了那份難受」。

One way to hold it: something happens — an accident, bad news, a scene you did not want to see — and it presses down on the person watching, leaving them shaken and unable to put it aside. *Distressing* points at the thing doing the pressing, not at the person feeling it.
