Picture your bank balance and an arrow pointing away from it. Money leaves; the number goes down. Everything this word does keeps that direction — the amount that left, the column where such amounts are written, the act of taking it out, and even a way of talking about the minus side of any list of pros and cons. Its opposite, credit, is the arrow pointing the other way.
