You can think of credit as 'trust' — believing that something or someone is good for it. From that one feeling of trust, two big things grow: trusting a person's word (so you believe them, or you praise them when they did well), and trusting that money will be there (so a shop lets you pay later, or your account shows money in your favour).

From Latin 'credere' = to believe, trust (also the root of 'believe', 'creed', 'credible'). Every modern sense — financial trust and personal trust alike — still grows from this one idea of 'being trusted'.
