One way to picture it: a small, set-apart room or building for prayer — not the big main church, but a little space tucked inside a hospital, a prison, a castle, or beside a cathedral, where a handful of people can gather.

From the word’s history

From Late Latin cappella, literally 'little cloak' — the diminutive of cappa (cloak). The word first named the small shrine built to house the preserved cloak of St Martin of Tours; the room around the relic took the relic's name, and 'little cloak' came to mean 'small side sanctuary'.

字根很有畫面：拉丁文 cappa 是「斗篷」，cappella 是「小斗篷」。相傳聖馬丁把自己的斗篷割一半給乞丐，那件斗篷後來被當成聖物保存，法蘭克王室蓋了一間小屋專門安放它——那間小屋就被叫做 cappella「小斗篷（的地方）」。之後凡是這種安放聖物、附屬於大建築的小型祈禱空間，都沿用了這個名字。所以 chapel 從一開始就帶著「小的、附屬的、專門留給神聖之事的空間」這層意思，而不是「教堂」的同義詞。
