A cathedral is not simply a big church — it is the one church in an area that holds the bishop's seat. Size follows from rank: because the bishop is based there, it is usually the oldest, tallest and most building in the city, and the town around it takes its name from it (Canterbury Cathedral, a cathedral city). A huge and beautiful church without a bishop is still just a church.

Cathedral comes from Late Latin ecclesia cathedralis 'church of a bishop's seat', from Latin cathedra 'chair, seat' (from Greek kathedra), which was the chair of a teacher or figure of authority. The chair is still inside the word: a cathedral is defined by whose seat is in it, which is why one area has only one, however many large churches it contains.
