You can think of a cable car as a car that never moves itself. Somewhere nearby, a long steel rope is turning all day in a loop, and the car simply joins it and is carried along. Hold on and you travel; let go and you stop. Hang the car under the rope and it sails over a valley. Lay the rope under a track and the car climbs a street. Both are the same idea, seen from above and from below.
可以想成 cable car 是「一台自己不會動的車」。附近有一條長長的鋼索，整天繞成一個圈在轉。車子只要接上它，就被帶著走。抓住就前進，放開就停下。把車廂吊在鋼索底下，它就飄過整座山谷。把鋼索埋進軌道下面，它就沿著街道爬坡。兩種其實是同一件事，只是一個從上面吊著，一個從下面拉著。所以不管哪一種，真正在動的都不是車，是那條索。
