Picture a rope so thick you cannot close your hand around it, made by twisting many thin strands together so the bundle is far stronger than any single strand. It ties a ship to the dock; it hangs a bridge in the air. Every other use of the word keeps that same body — a long, heavy, twisted line running from one place to another. Once the line starts carrying electricity or a signal instead of a load, the same word simply follows it: same shape, new job.
