This sense is a 1764 American English variant of 'burst', with the -r- dropped; it originally meant a frolic or spree, and the 'sudden failure / break' sense followed in the 1800s.

這個 bust 是 1764 年美式英語從 burst（爆裂）變來的寫法，把 -r- 省掉了；最早指狂歡、放縱一場，後來在十九世紀才長出「突然壞掉、垮掉」的意思。它和「半身像」的 bust 是完全不同的兩個字，只是拼法剛好撞在一起。

From French 'buste', from Italian 'busto' (upper body), from Latin 'bustum'; the 'carved head-and-chest statue' sense is from the 1690s, the 'human trunk above the waist' sense by 1727, and the 'woman's bosom / chest measurement' sense by 1884. It is etymologically unrelated to 'bust' = break.
