Think of someone putting a thing down on the table and saying, 'this one counts.' A deal is something people take seriously enough to talk about, and a big deal is one that takes up a lot of room in somebody's head. Every use of the phrase starts from that claim about size. English then plays with the claim: you can agree the thing really is that big, you can deny it, or you can say that somebody has it up.
可以想成有人把一件事放到桌上說：「這件很重要。」big deal 講的就是那件事在心裡佔的位子有多大。有趣的地方在後面。英文用這個詞的時候，常常不是在陳述份量，而是在跟那個份量討價還價。你可以同意它真的很大（a big deal for her），可以整個否認（no big deal），也可以說對方把它吹大了（make a big deal of it）。一種想法是：這個詞永遠在講份量，只是說話的人決定要不要承認那個份量。
