You can think of 'nothing' as pointing at an empty space and saying 'there's not one single thing there' — a clean zero. Everything else 'nothing' does grows from that zero: zero money (free, or worthless), zero importance (no big deal), zero connection (none of my business), and a whole crowd of fixed phrases that lean on 'a complete blank' to push back hard — to refuse, to deny, to insist there's absolutely no difference, or to flip around and stress that something really IS the case.

From Old English 'nan thing' — literally 'no thing'. The modern word is still that phrase pressed together, which is why its bedrock sense is simply 'not any thing'.
