A milestone is an important event or stage that marks real progress in something — a personal achievement (a child's first steps, graduating, a work anniversary), or a big step in a longer project (finishing the first version of a product). The word originally meant a literal stone marker placed along a road to show the distance traveled, and the figurative meaning — an important marker of progress — grew out of that.
