Picture the words themselves — the thing you hand over when you were wrong. English keeps that object and puts it into several fixed frames: sent ahead when you cannot come, made as you leave, refused when you stand by what you did. Two further uses drift away from regret altogether: a written defence of a belief, and a way of saying something barely counts as the thing it claims to be.
