You can picture one plain test: is there alcohol in it? Anything that answers yes — a glass of wine, a bottle of beer, a whole shelf of drinks in a bar — is alcoholic. The word starts as a simple label on a liquid, and everything else the word does is a step outward from that label: first to the damage the liquid causes in a body, then to the person whose life the liquid has taken over.
