Picture a printed menu with two headings: FOOD on one side, BEVERAGES on the other. Nobody at the table says 'pass me a beverage' — they say drink. Beverage can be thought of as the sign-and-paperwork word for a drink: the same thing in the cup, but named the way a menu, an airline announcement, or a company report would name it, because those places need one tidy label to cover coffee, juice, water and everything else at once.
