Picture a line drawn through one line in an account book. Nothing on the shelf has moved and nothing has disappeared — someone has simply decided that this will not be counted any more, and the page carries on below it. Whatever gets that line through it becomes a write-off.

Wiktionary records write-off as a deverbal noun: the noun comes from the phrasal verb write off. The action of crossing something off came first, and the noun names that act and its result.
