You can think of whistle as one clear picture: air forced through a small narrow opening makes a high, thin, piercing sound. your lips and blow — that's the original whistle. Everything else is the same event with a different opening: a small instrument, a bird's throat, a kettle's spout, a train's pipe, or even the slit cut by a fast object slicing through the air. From the action grows the tool that makes the sound, and from both grows the sound itself.
