Picture standing at the bottom of a staircase and looking up. 'Upstairs' points at everything on the far side of those steps. First it is a direction you travel (go upstairs), and once you are standing there, the same word simply names that part of the house.

可以想成「站在樓梯口往上看」的那個方向。樓梯把一棟房子切成上下兩邊，upstairs 指的就是樓梯上頭那一邊。它先是一個移動的方向（go upstairs 上樓），等人站定了，這個方向詞也就順手拿來指那一塊空間本身（樓上）。
