Aloft means high up in the air — up in the sky, up in the ropes of a ship, or up among the clouds. Sailors still say “go aloft” for climbing the masts. Writers use it for birds, flags, and anything held high. It is not a beginner classroom word; it sounds a little literary or like ship talk. You would not usually say “the lamp is aloft” for a light on the ceiling; you would say up or above. Though actually, weather people still say “conditions aloft” for the air high above us.
