Not knowing much about modern, fashionable or complicated things, usually because you have not met them. It can describe a person, a group of people, or their taste.
不諳世故的／不講究的
One way to hold this word: picture something that has had extra layers added to it over time — coats of polish, clever features, small refinements. Now take the layers away. What is left is plain and works in the open, with nothing folded into it. That is the whole word. Put it on a machine and you get equipment with no extra features; put it on a person and you get someone who has not been around the fashionable, version of things. Neither reading says the thing is bad. Both say the layers are missing.
