You can picture unsettled as something that has been stirred and has not come to rest yet. Shake a glass of river water: the sand hangs in the middle of it, and until the sand sinks you cannot see through. The verb settle is what has been taken away here. Settle covers coming to rest, sinking down, being decided, being paid, and stopping to make a home. Un- removes that last step. So whatever the unsettled thing is — a year, a person, an argument, the sky, a bill, a piece of land — something in it is still moving, or has never come to rest at all.

unsettled 可以想成一杯剛被攪過的水：沙還浮在中間，還沒沉到底，所以看不清楚。被拿掉的那個字是 settle。settle 本身就是「停下來、沉下去、定下來、結清、住下來」，前面加上 un-，等於把最後那一步抽走。所以不管後面接的是一段日子、一個人、一場爭執、天氣、一張帳單，還是一片土地，裡面都有東西還在動，或者根本還沒落地。
