「told」是 tell 的過去式，也是過去分詞——tell-told-told，後面兩個長得一模一樣，所以 I told him、I have told him、I was told 都用同一個 told。tell 可以想成「把話交到某個人手上」，所以 told 後面通常先接「聽的那個人」（told me、told Hana、told the class），再接內容。這也是 told 和 said 最好認的差別：said 先接「話」，要提到人就得加 to（said to me）。

You can picture something being handed from one person to another — news, a story, an order — except what is handed over is words. Told is that handing-over already finished, sitting in the past: it has left one person's mouth and reached the other's ear.
