一階樓梯
Picture one step in a flight — a single flat surface you put a foot on, on the way from one floor to the next. Everyday English almost always talks about the whole flight instead, and for that it uses the plural: the stairs. One old phrase, below stairs, still points at where those steps used to lead in a grand house.
可以想成：樓梯中的一階——你踩上去的那一塊平面，是從這一層走到下一層的其中一步。不過日常英文幾乎都在講整道樓梯，而講整道時要用複數 the stairs。另外還留著一句老話 below stairs，指的是舊時大宅裡那道階梯通往的地方。
