From Old English sāwan, from Proto-Germanic *sēaną, from Proto-Indo-European *seh₁- 'to sow, to plant' — the same root that gives seed and semen. The word has meant the scattering of seed for as long as it has been recorded; the modern figurative uses are all later extensions of that one physical act.
