A hand holding something and moving it quickly back and forth. That is all the word contains: shake, plus -er, the one that does it. Everything else is a matter of what is in the hand and why it is moving. Put salt in it and the shaking spreads the salt evenly; put a drink and ice in it and the shaking mixes and chills; put beads in a tube and the shaking makes a sound; put dice in a cup and the shaking makes the throw fair. Even the group of people called Shakers got the name from bodies moving that way in worship. The word in front of shaker almost always tells you what is being shaken.

From shake plus -er. The dictionary traces shake back through Middle English schaken and Old English sceacan. For the religious group, the source states plainly that the name came from the movements the members made in dancing, which formed part of their worship.

由 shake 加上 -er 組成。字典把 shake 一路追到中古英語 schaken、古英語 sceacan。至於大寫的 Shaker，字典寫得很清楚：這個名字來自成員聚會跳舞時的身體動作，而那是他們敬拜的一部分。所以人和器具走的其實是同一條構詞路線。
